Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter with role-playing structure, set in a science-fantasy solar system where you play a Guardian defending the last safe city on Earth.
Gunplay is the foundation and is widely regarded as among the best in the genre — weapon feel, recoil and audio are the studio's signature. On top of it sits a loot system: weapons and armour drop with randomised perks, and chasing a specific roll is the long-term pursuit that keeps players returning.
Three classes — Titan, Hunter, Warlock — each branch into subclasses built around an element, with a customisable set of abilities, grenades and movement options. Builds combine subclass, armour mods and weapon perks, and endgame content assumes you have built deliberately rather than equipped whatever dropped last.
Activities scale from open patrol zones and story missions through to six-player raids, which are the game's most demanding content: multi-stage encounters built on mechanics a team has to work out and then execute together. Competitive PvP runs alongside in several formats.
The base game is free to download and includes a substantial amount of content. Paid expansions and seasonal passes add campaigns, destinations, raids and gear, and are where the current story runs.
Bungie, the studio that created Halo, develops and publishes Destiny 2, operating it as a live service with seasonal content and annual expansions.
